Free Composting Workshop

Green Neighborhood Council’s Green Living Backyard

Composting and Vermicomposting Workshop
Saturday, May 8th from 10:00-11:30am
First Unitarian Church (3114 Harney St.)

The average American disposes over 4.5 lbs of trash per day. A large percentage of this waste is compostable material that can be put to good use. Composting is a simple, easy and efficient way to reduce waste while naturally improving the soil in your own lawn and garden.

Please join presenters Nicholas Randal, Mary Bamesberger and Ron Duce to learn more about backyard composting and vermicomposting, and how to begin or improve your own compost. This workshop is free and open to the public. Attend for a chance to win backyard composting items to get started in your own backyard!

Field Club Trail Fun Run/Walk

Saturday, April 24th
8-11 a.m. (begin at your leisure)
$15 (proceeds benefit Douglas County Health Center Foundation)
Pre-register by calling 402-444-7313 or emailing the Foundation.

FULL DETAILS:

A 3.5 mile walk/run along the Field Club Trail will raise money for renovations at the Douglas County Health Center. This inaugural walk/run is sponsored by the Douglas County Health Center Foundation.

The event, scheduled for the morning of Saturday, April 24, will take place between 8 and 11 a.m. and is expected to become an annual event.

“Since it’s a fun walk/run, participants can start whenever they want,” said Amy Chittenden, one of the walk/run organizers. “We only ask that they are done by 11.”

The cost is $15 and the first 150 people to register will receive a free water bottle. Registration can be done in advance, call 444-7313 or at dchcfoundation@gmail.com. Registration also will be offered in the Health Center’s Town Hall from 7 to 10 a.m. the day of the event.

In addition to the walk and the run, there is a “no walk-run” for anyone who doesn’t want to hit the trail but wants to support the Health Center. “No walk-run” participants are not eligible for a water bottle. Those taking part in the actual walk/run will be asked to sign a waiver.

Participants will be served snacks in the Douglas County Health Center Courtyard Pavilion after completing the event. Tours of the Health Center will be available during the morning.

“Some wonderful work is being done at the Douglas County Health Center,” said Health Center Administrator Jim Tourville. “We invite the community to come out for a nice morning of exercise and see what our five-star facility looks like.”

The Douglas County Health Center’s operates under a vision: To continually enhance quality of life by supporting a well-maintained, efficient, modern, home-like healthcare environment which provides services that are valued by the community we serve.

Neighborhood Garage Sale Weekend Announced

The more sales in an area, the more shoppers you draw. So we’re pooling our neighborhood sales into one great weekend.

Thursday, May 13 – Sunday, May 16

Details:

- Hold your whichever of the four days you prefer.
- We’ll put up signs at major intersections.
- You put up directional signs to your house.

At the end of the sale, donate what’s still good and bring the trash to Spring Clean Up day the next weekend at St. Adalbert’s.

Spread the word to your neighbors and garage-sale-loving friends.

Post your address below if you’re planning to have a sale! Once we gather a list of all the sales, we’ll make a map and post it.

Message from Senator Heath Mello

Fellow South Omaha Neighbors .

Over the past year, I have visited with many of you and discussed the need to build strong neighborhoods in South Omaha. As part of this building process, I, along with many other South Omaha residents, have been participating in the South Omaha Development Project (SODP).

As this project is now moving into the design process, I would like to invite you to participate in the SODP Design Charrette. The design charrette is a week-long collaborative exercise where a team of planning experts will meet with community members to address the planning and design issues that come with economic development. Everyone interested in the success and development of South Omaha is invited to come participate, sharing their ideas about South Omaha’s future, and offering feedback on the development plan.

The SODP Design Charrette
Monday, October 26th – Thursday, October 29th
6:00-8:00 P.M.
Livestock Exchange Building
5200 S. 30th St.

While the design process will evolve as the week goes on, you are welcome to attend one, two, three, or all four nights, as your schedule allows. Spanish language interpretation will be available each night as well.

The final project plan will be presented on Monday, November 2nd, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the TreeTops Restaurant at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo. I hope you will consider attending this event, which will be a culmination of the design charrette sessions.

Thank you for your dedication to South Omaha, and I hope to see you at one or more of the SODP Design Charrette events.

Working for you,

Senator Heath Mello

Thanks for making Summer Fest 2009 a success!

Message from the Vice President, Brenda Coleman

A huge “Thank You” to all of the volunteers that made this year’s Summer Fest a huge success! We still had a great turnout despite the pool closing earlier this year. We raised money for the gazebo restoration project by providing hot dogs, chips and drinks; we actually ran out of food!

Senator Gwen Howard donated children’s prizes and stopped by with cupcakes she baked herself. City Council President Garry Gernandt also stopped by to enjoy the fun.

There was face painting, washers, horseshoes, prizes and a raffle. The Omaha Police Mounted Patrol was there and gave many photo opportunities for families.

Face painting was a huge hit!

The weather was perfect for August and we were able to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. The evening concluded with a concert by Stephen Teft and the UNO faculty jazz band, both sponsored by the City’s Music in the Park program.

The UNO Faculty Jazz Combo played great music for over an hour.
